Guest hunts
How to invite people outside your hunting team to a single hunt, and how to join another team's hunt yourself as a guest.
What is a guest hunt?
A guest hunt means a person outside the team gets access to one specific hunt. The guest sees the map with other participants' positions, can log events (sighting, downed game, wounded game) and gets push notifications for that hunt.
The guest does not become a team member. They cannot see the team's calendar, notice board, contact list or anything else. When the hunt ends, the guest's access ends automatically.
Guests do not count toward the team's paid seats. Inviting five guests costs nothing extra.
Create a code for a hunt
Who can create a code
Team admins, the person who added the hunt, and the hunt's leader can create, rotate or revoke guest codes. Other members can see and copy an existing code, but cannot change it.
- Open the hunt event in the calendar.
- Scroll down to the Guest code card.
- Tap Generate guest code.
The code is three letters and three digits, for example ABC234. Letters that look alike (I and O) and digits that look alike (0 and 1) are not used, so the code is easy to read out over the phone.
Ad-hoc hunts get a code automatically
When someone starts a hunt straight from the map, without a planned event, Jaktli automatically creates a calendar event with a guest code. You never need to create a code yourself for ad-hoc hunts.
Share the code
A QR code is shown above the code. Ask the guest to point their phone camera at it and Jaktli opens in the right place with the code filled in. This is the easiest way when you are standing next to each other.
Three buttons also appear:
- Copy: puts the code on the clipboard so you can paste it into a text message or email.
- Share: opens the phone's share sheet so you can send the code through any app.
- Invite by email: type an email address and tap Send invite. The guest gets an email with the code and a button that opens the Jaktli app directly.
During a live hunt you can also show the code and QR straight from the map: open the hunt controls and tap Invite.
One code per hunt
The same code works for every guest you want to invite to the same hunt. You do not need to make a new code for each person.
Rotate or revoke the code
- Rotate code: generates a new code and invalidates the old one immediately. Use this if the code has spread to people it should not have.
- Revoke: removes the code entirely. No new guests can join until a fresh code is generated.
Guests who already joined stay in the hunt even after the code is rotated or revoked.
Join a hunt as a guest
You need a Jaktli account to join as a guest. If you do not have one, create one first.
From a QR code
Ask the host to show the QR code, either from the hunt event in the calendar or from the Invite button on the map during a live hunt. You can read it in two ways:
- With the phone camera: point the camera at it and tap the link that appears. Jaktli opens with the code already filled in.
- From inside the app: open Join hunt with code (see the steps below) and tap Scan QR code. Point the camera at the code and it is filled in and looked up automatically. The first time, the app asks for permission to use the camera.
From an email
Tap Open in Jaktli in the invitation email. The app opens with the code already filled in. Tap Look up code and then Join as guest.
From a code given by phone or text
- Open the Jaktli app.
- Tap the team picker at the top and choose Join hunt with code. If you are not in any team yet, the button sits on the start screen.
- Type the code, for example ABC234.
- Tap Look up code.
- Check that the right hunt is shown (title, date, host team) and tap Join as guest.
Once joined, the hunt appears under Your guest hunts on the start screen. When the hunt leader starts the hunt you get a push notification and can tap Live now to open the map.
What guests can see and do
As a guest you can:
- See the map with everyone's live position
- Share your own position so others see you
- Log events: sighting, downed game, wounded game
- Write in the hunt chat
As a guest you cannot:
- See the team's other sections (calendar, notice board, documents, contacts)
- Start or end the hunt
- See past hunts you were not part of
- Invite further guests
About guest accounts and security
The code is valid until the hunt ends or an admin revokes it. It only works for the specific hunt it belongs to. If the code leaks, an admin can tap Rotate code at any time to invalidate it.
Guests are not stored as members anywhere. The fact that a guest joined a past hunt shows in the participant list with (guest) appended after the name.
